Waste Report Recommends
No to Landfill

The long awaited report into waste strategy has been published by the Merseyside Environmental Service. It is a comprehensive review of waste produced in the Merseyside area and the facilities that will be required to treat and dispose of that waste. It makes many recommendations which will shape waste disposal policies over the years to come.

Crucially for residents in Prenton it does not recommend that there should be any additional landfill capacity in Wirral.

The report argues that the principle of net self sufficiency should apply to the treatment and disposal of waste. The increased emphasis on reduction, reuse and recycling; the lack of suitable sites for landfill, together with the fact that Merseyside receives waste from outside the area for treatment and energy recovery, and that landfill capacity is available in neighbouring areas will ensure that Merseyside retains that self-sufficiency even without additional landfill capacity being developed. Thus the report concludes that there is no need for additional landfill capacity in Merseyside.

Cllr Frank Doyle comments: “This is very good news, and a victory for those Prenton residents who have campaigned against it. The report still has to be approved by each of the Merseyside Councils and Halton Council, but it brings to an end a long period of anxiety over the old clay quarry in Prenton Dell.”
