Some background information

There is some confusion about what can and can't go in the new bins. This information might help:

Different systems are in operation in different parts of Oxton:
  • The area between Woodchurch Road and Townfield Lane (including Farndon Way area) was a pilot area for the new brown bins in the summer. Residents here can put both garden and kitchen waste in the brown bins.
    • The waste is composted in the new in-vessel composting plant at Bidston.
    • The system is still being tested and has to be passed by the State Veterinary Service.
  • Other households received a new brown bin in October. These are designed for garden waste only at present
    • The contents are composted separately
  • Brown bins are emptied fortnightly.
Now most houses have also received an additional grey bin. They are for most packaging: plastics (but not plastic bags or film); glass ; paper (not catalogues or phone books), cardboard (not tetra packs), clean tin foil or food containers and cans . They will be emptied fortnightly, alternating with your old green bin . You will probably find that most of your waste will go in one of your recycling bins. Only items that cannot be recycled should go in the green bin . Please note that extra bin bags will not be collected. Thanks to the Liberal Democrats, the Council has reinstated the free bulky waste collection service (ERIC). If you have any queries about recycling or the ERIC service, then please contact Streetscene on 606 2004 or email streetscene@wirral.gov.uk The Council also offers a service where a Recycling Officer can come to your house to go through what rubbish you are producing and advise on its disposal. If you are having problems storing three bins, they can also see what alternative arrangements can be offered.
