‘NAME AND SHAME LAWBREAKERS' CALL

A Wirral Liberal Democrat Councillor is calling for shops and off-licenses who sell alcohol to children to be made known to the public.

Councillor Ann Bridson, Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson said,

“We believe the general public have the right to know which companies and shops are breaking the law by selling alcohol to children.

“We're calling for the naming and shaming of those licensed premises that have been dealt with through the court process for underage sales.”

A report to tonight's Environment and Transportation Select Committee reveals that during a recent under age alcohol sales survey, a thirteen-year old was served alcohol in 10 of out of the eleven premises targetted.

Councillor Bridson added,

“We're also very supportive of the THINK 21 campaign and we're enocuraging our officers to continue to provide training to staff in Wirral off-licences. THINK 21 is a more effective approach to under age sales. If staff in licensed premises are trained to challenge customers who don't look 21 there's a greater likelihood that they'll identify the under-18's.”
