Local Lib Dems back national plan to cut carbon
footprint with ‘carbon neutral Wirral'

RADICAL plans agreed at the Liberal Democrats' recent conference in Brighton to cut down on pollution have been backed by members from Wirral.

Councillor Gill Gardiner, Wirral Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, met Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, Chris Huhne MP, at the conference to show her support for the plans.

“Global climate change and extreme weather conditions are the biggest challenges we face over the next few decades,” said Councillor Gardiner.

“It is widely accepted that the amount of carbon we emit, known as a ‘carbon footprint', needs to be cut to slow down the rate of global warming and climate change.

“The freak storms and the damage they have caused throughout the summer will happen more and more often if we don't take action to cut our carbon emissions, the main form of pollution leading to climate change.

‘Although Wirral didn't suffer as badly from the summer flooding as did the worst-hit areas in the rest of the country, nevertheless I know that terrible damage was inflicted on many households.

“We want our country by the middle of this century to emit, overall, no carbon pollution, and we're contributing to that goal locally with our aim for a carbon-neutral Wirral. It will be a challenge - but if we start now, we can help ensure that this summer's extreme and damaging weather conditions will remain freak, rather than annual, events.”

Liberal Democrats have set out a vision of a ‘carbon neutral' Britain by the year 2050.

They argue that action is needed now to change to greener and cleaner lifestyles. Their plans include massively improving railways to encourage more people to leave their cars at home and rewarding people who drive cleaner, low-pollution vehicles by scrapping car tax.
