Budget Support for Wirral's Veterans

Wirral's Veterans have been included in the Council's Budget proposals announced last week.

Councillor Simon Holbrook, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group and Cabinet member for Corporate Services said,

“It's important that we pay tribute to Wirral's veterans.

“That is why we have made available this funding, for veterans of all ages and service experience, to help draw down matching funding from the Ministry of Defence for a Wirral Veterans Day, in line with the creation of a National Veterans Day.”

The Government launched National Veterans Day in 2006. Each year June 27 is set aside to focus on surviving veterans and celebrate their achievements.

Funding is available via the Ministry of Defence to generate local events that promote the Veterans Day messages. The Government hopes that through local and national celebrations, National Veterans Day will become as familiar and respected as Remembrance Sunday, which remembers and honours those who died serving their country.

Councillor Holbrook continued,

“Veterans organisations here in Wirral will have the opportunity to seek funding from the Council for specific events such as the National Veterans Day event, which this year is to be held in Blackpool . They will also be in a position to apply to the Ministry of Defence for matched funding for local events.”

That the sum of £15,000 be made available to organisations representing veterans in Wirral in order to pay for specific events and provide assistance in drawing down matching funding from the Ministry of Defence for a Wirral Veterans Day, in line with the creation of a National Veterans Day, focussing on the diverse community of surviving veterans of all ages and service experience.
