Weekend Clean Ups for Play Areas Children's play areas are set to receive extra attention as part of the Council's Budget proposals. Councillor Bob Moon, Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Leisure said, “There's a growing problem of misuse of children's play areas, particularly over weekends, which makes them unuseable by the young children for whom they're intended. “This Council has invested substantially in refurbishing and re-equipping play areas and we want to ensure they remain attractive and safe for our children to enjoy. “The play areas are checked for safety and cleared of litter on weekdays but it's now clear that extra attention is needed to protect children from dangerous litter such as glass and other debris that is deposited out of hours. “We're proposing a pilot cleaning scheme that will respond flexibly outside normal working hours to clean up those play areas where particular problems are identified during periods of high use. “And as we respond to problems during the pilot we can build up a picture of how and where our services can best be directed and use it to inform future service del ivery.” The Council's budget proposals also include a ‘You Decide' initiative, which will enable local people, through new funding arrangements via their Area Forums, to have the option of ‘buying in' extra services from the Council. An Extract from Budget proposals follows:: Weekend Clean Ups for Targeted Play areas. £20,000 That the sum of £20,000 be allocated to a pilot cleaning scheme capable of responding flexibly outside normal hours, including weekends, to calls to remove glass and debris from those children's play areas where particular problems of cleanliness and safety are identified during periods of high use. That this scheme be monitored and the results used to inform future service delivery. more:- That it be noted that the option remains with all areas to seek additional funding or provision of assistance in cleaning up local areas through the use of the local choice initiative outlined in paragraph C above.
