New Council team to lead the way on tackling climate change and cutting energy bills

Wirral Council's carbon footprint - and its energy bills - are set to be slashed by a new team.

Wirral Council's new Sustainability team will reduce the council's carbon footprint and at the same time save taxpayers' money by not only cutting council energy bills, but also cutting the bills of local householders and businesses.
Councillor Gill Gardiner , Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Environment, said,

“As well as the Council, local people and businesses are also facing big energy increases.

“To help them keep energy costs down, and cut carbon emissions, Wirral Council is signing up to the radical new ‘CRed' scheme.

“Now currently running in various towns and cities across the country, the scheme promotes low-carbon lifestyles which in turn cut fuel costs. CRed seeks to achieve a 60% reduction in carbon emissions by 2025, which is significantly higher than the Government's own target.

“A new Sustainability (CRed ) Liaison Officer is to be appointed to promote a Wirralwide CRed Carbon Reduction initiative, providing information and working with local partners, businesses and communities to help them to reduce their own energy use.”

“As well as helping Wirral Council's budget, the new Sustainability Unit and CRed will help the budgets of all those families currently struggling to pay fuel bills, and at the same time help stave off the threat of Climate Change. A win win situation all round.”

The establishment of the Sustainability Unit was discussed at last night's meeting (25/09/2008) of Wirral's Cabinet.
