Flooding - Greasby Councillors call on water giant to take action

Councillors for Greasby are pressing water giant United Utilities to take action after extensive flooding caused misery for local residents.

Councillor Peter Reisdorf said,

"My colleagues and I have had complaints about flooding right across Greasby from Arrowe Road to Frankby Road . The cause of the flooding appears to be lack of capacity in the main sewers.  We ' ve asked for a meeting with United Utilities.

“Recent heavy downpours caused flooding problems particularly for Arrowe Road and Greasby Road .  Just last week a car was overturned on Greasby Road by a drain cover that was forced up by the pressure of water. Local gullies not only take water from the Arrowe Road area, but also the Rigby Drive area. This then drains into a sewer which is the responsibility of United Utilities. The water finally ends up in the Arrowe Brook.

“Council Officers have promised to come up with measures to reduce the risk of the gullies in Arrowe Road overflowing in heavy downpours, but this depends upon there being sufficient capacity in the main sewer to take the extra water which is why a meeting has been arranged with United Utilities.”
Investigations by Council Officers carried out at the request of the local Councillors have shown that on this occasion the gullies were clear but the sewer had completely filled up and was unable to drain quickly enough during the heavy rain so that water flowed back through the gullies causing the flooding.
