WIRRAL'S YOUNG TO BE GIVEN A VOICE Children and young people are to be given a voice in the Council's corridors of power. Wirral Council last night agreed to hold a special meeting to focus on children and young people. Councillor Tom Harney, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Education, who proposed the idea said, “This builds upon Wirral's recently-launched ‘Charter of Participation for Children and Young People' which is designed to enable children and young people to have a direct influence on all the services that affect them. “The intention is that we as Councillors should apply the Charter to what we do as decision-makers and use it in planning the work of our committees, including area forums, to ensure that the voice of children and young people is heard. “Young people themselves will need to be consulted on the type of meeting we hold and there will be an evaluation afterwards. “In this way we can gradually develop ways of effectively engaging with young people. Councillor Harney's motion was seconded by the Labour Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Phil Davies. END OF PRESS RELEASE
Councillor Harney's Motion to 19 December Council NOTICE OF MOTION: Participation by Young People Proposed by Councillor Harney “This Council recognises the work that is being done to enable young people to participate in the work of the Council. In particular it congratulates all those who were involved in the writing of the “Charter for Participation". It recommends that the Evaluation and Action Plan be used in planning the future work of all committees, including area forums. Council asks that the training issues raised by the Charter be incorporated in the training and development programme for members. It resolves that there be a special Council meeting, or similar event, to focus on young people and ensure that their voice is heard in the forthcoming municipal year." |
