Another boost to Wirral's recycling rates
Thousands of empty drinks cartons add to the waste sent to landfill sites every week, but that's about to change in Wirral, sending the Borough's recycling rates even higher.
Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for the Environment, Councillor Gill Gardiner, said,
“I'm delighted to announce that Wirral's Recycling Officers, working jointly with Tetrapak, have secured 7 sites in the Borough for recycling Tetrapak drink cartons. This will further complement our service, and achieve even higher recycling rates for Wirral.
“Wirral's recycling rates may be rocketing but there's no room for complacency.”
Wirral's recycling rate shot up by 13% to 27.5% for April, May and June. This compares with 2006/2007, which saw just 14% of all waste recycled.
Councillor Ga rdiner continued,
“Wirral people have really taken up the recycling challenge; many have expressed disappointment that they've been unable to recycle paper based liquid food and drink cartons. At present the MURF facility at Bidston is unable to take these cartons so they cannot be put in the grey bins; these new facilities will provide a convenient alternative.”
The Tetrapak recycling sites are located at:
- Bidston Moss, Tesco
- Bromborough, Asda
- Heswall, Tesco
- Liscard, Asda
- Woodchurch, Asda
- Greasby Library (Council)
- Dee Lane, West Kirby (Council)
