Liberal Democrats welcome proposal to use The Oval for Olympics training Liberal Democrats in Wirral South have welcomed the recommendation that Bebington Oval should be used as an athletics training camp in the run up to the London Olympics in 2012. Paula Southwood, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Wirral South said, "I am delighted that Wirral has been listed in the Pre-Games Training Camp Guide and hope that many countries choose to send their teams to the area to train. "This is a fantastic opportunity for Bebington which will help boost the Wirral economy and ensure that the Olympic legacy reaches beyond London . “The London Olympics will be a major event and the government has agreed to put a huge amount of money into the games. It is great to see that we are going to see direct benefits from this right here in Wirral rather than just in London . "I am looking forward to welcoming athletes from all over the world to the Wirral in 2012.” On 3rd March, the government announced a recommended list of venues and facilities for pre-games training camps for the 2012 London Olympics.
