Wirral's recycling rate ‘overperforming' at 40% Wirral's recycling rate is ‘overperforming' at 40% and is set to rise as more initiatives come on stream. Councillor Gill Gardiner , Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for Environment said, “This is a fantastic achievement and demonstrates the level of enthusiasm of Wirral people who have given their overwhelming support for all our recycling initiatives. “At 40% we have gone beyond our targets, and with new initiatives coming on stream such as the Tidy Business Scheme, increased schools recycling, and ‘Give-Away Days', we can look forward to even better results. The exceptional recycling performance levels, along with the new community recycling initiatives, are to be discussed at today's meeting of Wirral's Environment watchdog Committee. Councillor Ga rdiner continued, “ The Council is engaging with communities on a wide range of environmental issues which promise to up our recycling rate even further. Schools have been offered classroom grey recycling bins; businesses are being encouraged to reduce waste, reuse and recycle via the Keep Britain Tidy Business Awards; we've held Big Tidy Up campaigns, with over 30 events organised so far; and ‘Give-away Days' or swap days to promote re-use and recycling.” To start the ball rolling on ‘Give-Away Days', Councillor Ga rdiner has organised a ‘Big Give-Away Day' in her own ward on January 17 th at Greasby Community Centre. Councillor Gardiner also scotched the rumours that recyclates are being sent to landfill, “Despite falling market prices for recyclates, rumours that the contents of grey bins are being sent to landfill are completely untrue. Please continue to recycle, it will save landfill costs and help to keep Council Tax down.” ENDS To read the reports to Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee click on the links below
