WIRRAL SET TO SAY ‘NO' TO WASTE SITES

Wirral Council is set to give a resounding ‘no' to proposals for a series of controversial waste sites, and Council chiefs have criticised the regional body proposing the sites for ‘causing needless concern to the public.'

Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Environment, Councillor Ann Bridson , said,

“Of the 16 sites proposed, our Officers have recommended accepting only 3.

“These 3 sites are existing waste management facilities.

“The remaining 13 sites are patently unsuitable, and had the regional body putting forward these proposals assessed these sites before asking us to consult, Wirral residents would have been spared a lot of trouble and anxiety.”

The sites accepted as ‘ suita ble' are all currently in use as waste facilities;: two are located at: Wallasey Bridge Road , (Bidston Materials Recovery Facility and the George Major facility) and one at Cammell Laird's (Global Recycling).

Of the sites deemed ‘unsuitable', 4 are in the Green Belt.

The waste site proposals went out to consultation following Cabinet on October 16 and prompted numerous petitions, public meetings and protests.

The Council's full response to the Joint Merseyside Waste Development Pl an Document, which included the sites proposals, is to be discussed at a meeting of Wirral Council's Cabinet next week.
