Budget ‘that delivers'

Wirral Council meets tonight (3rd March) to set its Budget. Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, Councillor Simon Holbrook, who will be seconding the joint administration's budget, says,

“This is a Budget that delivers much-needed financial stability, a below inflation Council Tax Rise, a package of improvements worth over £1m, and sets the Council on course to fulfil its ambitious New Vision for Wirral.
“In short it's a Budget that delivers.

“It represents the most coherent and well thought out Budget, with a clarity of purpose, founded on a year of solid achievement against difficult financial circumstances, that I have seen in my years as a Councillor.

Commenting on the Conservative budget proposals Councillor Holbrook said,

“Cabinet sought to set as low a Council Tax as possible consistent with the future and prudent financing of the Borough. Conservatives by contrast are taking irresponsible risks with the finances for their own short term political goals. Their budget is less stable, less sustainable and less transparent.

“They propose a lower Council Tax but make additional spending commitments.

“They've conveniently dropped their opposition to around £8.4m of efficiencies and they also support all of the Cabinet's policy options.

“Given these positive endorsements of this administration's policies contained within its Budget proposals, could I therefore now invite the Leader of the Conservative Group to take the next step and declare himself and his Party fully behind the Council's new Corporate Plan and Vision, on which our Budget is built?
