WIRRAL LIBERAL DEMOCRATS CONGRATULATE NEW LEADER

Wirral Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Stuart Kelly has added his congratulations to those already flooding into the party's headquarters following the election of Sir Menzies Campbell as the new leader of the Liberal Democrats.

Councillor Kelly said,

“On behalf of Wirral Liberal Democrats I'd like to congratulate Sir Menzies Campbell on his victory in an election that has demonstrated the breadth of talent in our party.

“Sir Menzies brings a wealth of experience to the leadership, enjoys the respect of all Parliamentarians, and is committed to social justice and giving more power to people. I'm confident he can build on the achievements of Paddy Ashdown and Charles Kennedy.

“The campaign has been conducted in an atmosphere of good humour and respect and following a democratic ballot of all party members we can now unite behind Menzies this weekend at our Party's Spring Conference in Harrogate .

"Since 2004 the Liberal Democrats in the North West have doubled their number of MPs and MEPs. Even in the midst of a leadership election, the party pulled off a stunning by election victory in Dunfermline & West Fife.

“Now with an excellent new Leader elected I'm sure we can expect greater successes to come.
