WIRRAL BEACHES RATED EXCELLENT IN ‘ GOOD BEACH GUIDE' Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for the Environment Cllr Gill Gardiner today welcomed the news that Wirral beaches are now featured in the country's biggest and best beach guide as bathing sites recommended by the Marine Conservation Society for excellent water quality. The Marine Conservation Society has listed Moreton, West Kirby, New Brighton and Meols as "Recommended Beaches 2007" in the ‘Good Beach Guide'. Councillor Gill Gardiner said, “This is excellent news, just in time for the better weather as people return to the beaches” “As Cabinet member it is important to ensure that Wirral's coastline is of the highest quality for people to enjoy and wildlife to thrive; we now have the Marine Conservation Society's recommendation for excellent water quality at these sites. Of the North West 's 54 beaches listed in the Good Beach Guide, only 7 have received this recommendation and we can be very proud that 4 of them are in Wirral.” “Last year only Meols and New Brighton received this recommendation, Moreton received only a basic pass. It's particularly good news for West Kirby which failed last year and was not recommended for swimming, this year it received the highest recommendation along with the other 3 beaches listed in Wirral.” The recommendation is on the basis of water sampling undertaken by the Environment Agency. Posters will be displayed in the cabinets adjacent to the beaches. The Good Beach Guide is published by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) - the UK charity dedicated to the protection of our seas, shores and wildlife. It is the biggest and best beach guide available with a description, photo and map for each of 1,200 beaches in the UK and Ireland .
