GLOBAL WARMING: COUNCIL MUST ‘DO ITS BIT' A new call is going out to Wirral Council to do its bit to combat Global Warming. Liberal Democrats want the Council to revisit pledges it made several years ago to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote awareness of climate change. I In 2001 the Council signed up to the Nottingham Declaration, promising to take steps to put its own house in better order. Now a Liberal Democrat motion is to go before February's Full Council Me eting calling on the Council to revisit the Nottingham Declaration and take stock of what's been done to date, what needs doing, and what can be done. Councillor Phil Gilchrist, who will be proposing the motion, said, ''Work goes on all the time; small steps are taken which add up, like energy efficient light fittings and improved insulation. “We now want regular reports on what is being done to reduce our impact on the global environment. We need to take stock of where we are and act. “We owe it to future generations.” Seconding the motion is Liberal Democrat Leader Councillor Stuart Kelly , who last August recognised that the hike in gas and electricity prices required action to save energy. Since then a series of meetings has been held to push action up the agenda. “Helping our global environment will also help keep energy costs down, which is good news for the council taxpayers of Wirral,” said Councillor Kelly |
