Wirral breaks composting records

A record number of Wirral residents are turning to home composting – its official.

Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for the Environment Cllr Gill Gardiner , welcomed the news, saying,

“Latest figures from WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) show that Wirral sold 1362 home composters from January to June 2007. That's more than was sold in Wirral in total in the last 7 years!

“This is excellent news for the environment; home composting is a far more environmentally-friendly and economic way of preventing organic waste from ending up in landfill.”

“Garden waste is not the only thing that you can put in your compost bin. Surveys show that at least 25% of our household bin could be composted.

“There are loads more everyday items that you can add to enrich your compost including tea bags, vegetable peelings, old flowers, fruit scraps, coffee grounds and filter paper, egg shells, egg boxes, cereal boxes, newspaper, toilet and kitchen roll tubes, wool, shredded confidential documents.”

“We will be encouraging more households to find out about home composting. A roadshow is planned for the autumn and Information leaflets are available from One Stop Shops or on the Council's website: click here
A range of cut price home composters are available; for example, a standard 330L compost bin is available for only £10 including free delivery. They can be ordered online at www.recyclenow.com/compost or by calling 0845 077 0757 quoting reference HCA1”.

Wirral's recycling rate rocketed by 13% to 27.5% for April, May and June. This compares with 2006/2007, which saw just 14% of all waste recycled.
