Councillors throw out move to ban dogs on beaches
Ban ‘completely over the top'.

Liberal Democrat Councillors last night spoke out against a controversial proposal to ban dogs from Wirral's main beaches.

Councillor Mike Redfern, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on Wirral's Culture Tourism and Leisure Scrutiny Committee said,

“We should not be seeking to alienate the vast majority of dog owners who do clear up after their dogs. I'm delighted the Committee rejected these proposals and agreed the far better approach of persuading and educating the minority of owners who don't clear up, and providing prominent notices and more disposal facilities at our most popular beaches.

Councillor Peter Reisdorf, member of the Committee and PPC for Wirral West added,

“A ban on dogs on beaches would be completely over the top.  As well as being unnecessary I believe it would probably be unworkable.  There are certainly areas such as Hilbre Island where controls on animals are necessary, but I don't think we can apply this as a general rule.”

Council Officers will now report back to the Committee on costs involved.
