WIRRAL RESPONDS TO MERSEY WASTE PLANS Responding to this morning's Daily Post lead story on potential sites for Mersey waste plants, the Cabinet Member for Streetscene & Transport Services (which includes waste collection and recycling), Liberal Democrat Councillor Jean Quinn said, “Wirral already has the best recycling record in Merseyside and, unlike the other boroughs, has already approved a planning permission for an ‘Energy From Waste' plant based on pyrolysis. Therefore, we believe that Wirral is already “doing its bit” to anticipate and meet the future waste disposal demands of the region without building additional capacity in the borough. “Of the three Wirral sites identified, the West Float is an obvious non-starter as it is part of the proposed Wirral Waters project. Two of the sites are at Cammell Lairds - clearly, you wouldn't develop both. In any event, with the recent success in securing new ship-building work, we believe that better uses can be found for this land that would bring higher value jobs to the borough.”
