LIB DEMS CRITICISE LABOUR'S PETTY POLITICS – ‘YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS' CLAIMS SIMON HOLBROOK

Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Wirral and Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Simon Holbrook explains the difficult budget situation facing the council and criticises Steve Foulkes' recent comments in the press as ‘petty opposition politics.'

Simon Holbrook said, “It is impossible for anyone to know what the Labour Group's true position is on local spending cuts. In the space of just one day* Cllr Foulkes says it is ‘the wrong time' to make cuts, but elsewhere states that ‘the authority needs to quickly find ways to cover the budget shortfall.

“Councillor Foulkes can't have it both ways – this contradiction of his own position exposes how quickly he has transformed himself from responsible leadership to irresponsible petty opposition politics. He cannot be serious.  The people of Wirral expect their politicians to treat the issues more seriously.

“Despite the personal views of the Leader of the Council, I still maintain that the previous administration left the Council finances in good shape. Politicians from all political parties have always known that there are tough times and extremely difficult choices ahead for local government as a result of the decisions of the previous Labour Government. We know that the Council will need to reduce its budget next year by over £20m and we need to act responsibly to do this and do it in a way that minimises the impact for local people.

“In order to help us make those decisions we have fought hard to ensure that the joint administration makes it a priority to deliver on the Liberal Democrat policy of engagement.  The Council is now embarking on its biggest ever consultation with residents and businesses about the future of council services.”
