“FREE FROM THREE” FREE PARKING IN THE RUN UP TO CHRISTMAS

  Cllr Jean Quinn

Christmas shoppers can benefit from free parking after 3pm on Thursdays in December in the run up to Christmas.

The measure was moved as an amendment by the Council's Cabinet at its meeting last night, 5th November, as part of its consideration of a report into car parking.

Liberal Democrat Cabinet Member for Streetscene and Transport, Councillor Jean Quinn, said, “The development of a Car Parking Strategy for Wirral is important to provide a sound basis for car parking policy in the future in order to support retail, commercial and residential developments, as well as improve the environment and help people to stay healthy.”

Funding for the free parking will come from money set aside from the 2009 reduction in the rate of VAT.

Cllr Quinn continued, “In the immediate short term during the recession, we need to support retailers and shoppers throughout the Christmas period and passing on VAT savings to Christmas shoppers in the form of free parking is one way of doing this.”

There will be free parking on the three Thursdays before Christmas (3rd , 10th and 17th December) in the shoppers' car parks in Birkenhead, Liscard, Heswall and West Kirby and free parking all day Boxing Day and New Years Day to help attract shoppers to the Sales.
