GREEN GRANTS FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS Community groups are being invited to apply for grants to enable their buildings to be more energy efficient and reduce running costs. Liberal Democrats secured a total of £66,000 in this year's council budget to be allocated for Energy Efficiency Grants for Community Groups. The grants will enable the Council to support the long term sustainability of community groups running community buildings, giving these groups access to appropriate energy efficiency technologies to help them reduce their energy bills and carbon emissions. It will have the knock-on effect of helping community groups tackle and reduce Wirral's carbon footprint. There will be two levels of grant – up to £2,000 will be available to organisations meeting the criteria for the scheme and, for organisations willing to provide match funding, up to £4,000 would be available. Cllr Gill Gardiner, Wirral's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "I would encourage community groups to come forward and apply for these grants as it could really benefit their group, the community building and the environment of Wirral as a whole." "Liberal Democrats worked hard to ensure that the environment was one of the priorities in this years budget. At a time when we know that residents, community groups and the Council will need to reduce their spending, I'm delighted that we have been able to make this money available to improve energy saving measures that will help us all to make cost and energy savings in the years ahead." Interested groups should contact the council team on 691 8409 to initially register their interest.
